This was a game the Chiefs could have, and probably should have won. In the end a penalty from the touchline in injury time gave the home side a narrow victory.
The Chiefs scrummaged well and played some attractive rugby, but lineout problems continue, and this is proving to be more costly at this higher level.
Ivybridge applied early pressure, but the Chiefs defended well and broke out to open the scoring with a fine try. A good handling move made ground down the right where a kick ahead was followed up by Sam Heathcote, who chased and gathered the ball then beat two men on his way to touching down under the posts. Jake Smith added the conversion.
Sidmouth soon increased their lead when good handling following a turnover near halfway gave Rory O’Brien space on the left. He outpaced the cover to score in the corner. Ivybridge opened their account when the Chiefs lost a lineout inside their own 22 and two forwards combined for a try wide out.
The Chiefs had an opportunity to increase their lead when they were awarded a penalty in front of the post. Instead, a tap penalty failed to produce a score, a decision which would eventually prove costly.
The score remained 12-5 in favour of the Chiefs at halftime but Ivybridge level things up two minutes after the restart when the scrum half won the chase to grubber kick into the 22 to gather and touch down.
The Chiefs soon regained the lead when Sam Heathcote won the chase for a high kick into the opposing 22 to gather and race in under the posts. Jake Smith converted. And he soon increased the lead with a penalty.
Over the next 10 minutes the Chiefs lead evaporated as they conceded a series of penalties and Ivybridge capitalised on the territory they gained as a result scoring three unanswered tries. The tight head prop touched down twice from moves around lineouts close to the line. The third came from a good handling move inside the 22. Two conversions put them in front 31-22.
The Chiefs regrouped and narrowed the gap with a bonus point try scored by Tom Hodge after good work inside the opposing 22. Jake Smith converted before putting his side ahead with a well struck penalty.
Ivybridge had the final say with a penalty in injury time.
On Saturday the Chiefs entertain Marlborough kicking off at 3pm.
The Quins travel to play Teignmouth 2nds.
On Sunday the Valkyries travel to Trowbridge for their first game of the season due to a cancelled game last weekend, kicking off at 2pm.
