A good crowd at the Blackmore Field enjoyed an entertaining game played in perfect conditions but the Chiefs are still searching for their first win in Regional League One.
Once again, they competed very well and were in contention until an injury time try deprived them of either victory or a losing bonus point.
Marlborough had the better of the opening quarter, scoring two unconverted tries. The inside centre looped around his winger for the first and the number four forced his way over from the base of a ruck near the line. However, Sidmouth hit back with two tries of their own in quick succession. A penalty try when Marlborough collapsed a driving maul as it reached the line yielded seven points. Another lineout maul put them in the lead when Jed Reid powered over from close range.
Marlborough regained the lead in first half injury time when a diagonal kick by the fly half found his right winger in space to touch down unopposed for a converted try to end the half.
The visitors increased their lead 15 minutes after the restart when a forward scored from a move off the back of a lineout. Sidmouth responded with an excellent try following a turnover on halfway. Good handling made space for Lewis Hole to make the important break. Deep into the 22, he found Rory O'Brien in support to apply the finishing touch. Jake Smith converted before kicking a penalty to close the gap further.
The influential Marlborough number eight scored a fine individual try when he followed up his kick into the 22 to regather and dive over in the corner for an unconverted try.
The Chiefs closed the gap again when Sam Heathcote scored finding himself on the end of a good handling move following a tap penalty in the 22. A penalty from Jake Smith closed the gap further to just one point with time running out.
When a Sidmouth knock on near their own 22 bounced straight into the hands of an opponent deep into injury time, he started a move which produced a try by their fly half. The conversion deprived the Chiefs of a valuable bonus point.
On Saturday the Chiefs travel to Lydney.
On the Blackmore Field the Quins, who top their league with three consecutive wins, entertain Exeter Athletic at 3pm.
The Colts play Topsham Colts at Sidford kicking off at 2.30pm.
