For the third time the Chiefs have led at halftime but failed to win the match as they still seek their first win of the season.
The Chiefs kicked off in perfect conditions and took the lead after five minutes thanks to a monster kick by debutant fly half James Docherty, debutant but not a youngster. He landed the penalty from wide out on the halfway line.
Matson responded to take the lead midway through the half when the right winger jumped above the defenders to catch a diagonal kick from his fly half and drop over the line for an unconverted try.
The Chiefs regained the lead when good work from the backs sent Rory O'Brien sprinting in from the halfway line. James Docherty added the conversion.
When the Chiefs turned over possession on halfway they moved the ball superbly with backs and forwards combining through many phases to the Matson goal line where scrum half Ben Fisher looked certain to score but lost possession as he crossed the line. However the referee awarded a penalty for an earlier offence. Once again the ball was advanced to the line where Shaun Malton drove over for a try. Docherty added the conversion to give the Chiefs a 17-5 lead at halftime.
From the restart the Chiefs were soon pressing inside the opposing 22, where they won a scrum against the head. However, a knock on allowed Matson to clear the danger.
When Matson won a five metre scrum at the other end they made no mistake when the scrum half found a gap to score an unconverted try.
Matson took control through the middle of the half to add two more tries. A forward peeled off the side of a lineout maul to dive over. Then when the Chiefs missed touch a flanker made a powerful run from halfway deep into the Sidmouth 22 where he found a player in support to finish off near the post. The conversion opened up a five point lead.
A penalty made it eight before Docherty kicked one to give Sidmouth a late bonus point.
On Saturday the Chiefs entertain St Austell kicking off at 3pm.
The Quins travel to play Tiverton 2nds who top the league.
The Colts are away to Exeter Saracens.
