Sidmouth RFC

30 - 23

(HT 0-0)

St Austell RFC
At last, the Chiefs managed to translate a halftime lead into their first win of the season in a thoroughly entertaining game of rugby between two well matched teams.

A strong and determined defence was key to success, particularly in the 13 minutes of extra time found by the referee, played out mainly in the Sidmouth half. Also important was the much -improved success in the lineout, which has previously been a weak area.

The Chiefs made a flying start, scoring 15 points in as many minutes. Sam Heathcote opened the scoring after five minutes finishing off good, combined work by backs and forwards with a try in the right corner. James Docherty added the conversion.

Heathcote was soon in the action again when he followed up his own kick ahead to regather and touch down for a second try, which was unconverted. However, Docherty was on target with a penalty kick on the quarter hour.

St Austell opened their account straight from the restart kick when they regained possession and set their backs in motion for a move finished off by the right winger. Five minutes later the outside centre found space to score a fine individual try under the posts and the conversion reduced the Sidmouth lead to three points.

A James Docherty penalty put the Chiefs 18-12 up at the break. However, a yellow card for Lewis Hole on the stroke of halftime reduced them to 14 men.

St Austell took advantage straight from the kick off to score a fine try following a line out with good handling creating a space out wide. The conversion was unsuccessful leaving the Chiefs with the narrowest of leads.

Immediately from the restart kick, Tom Hodge was yellow carded for an early tackle leaving the Chiefs with 13 men for the next five minutes. A penalty kicked by the St Austell fly half put them in the lead for the first time.

The Chiefs were put under pressure for the next ten minutes but defended well to prevent a further score before they regained the lead when George Locke intercepted a loose pass and sprinted into the 22. He was stopped just short of the line, but support was on hand to send Tom Hodge over under the posts.

A St Austell penalty closed the gap before an inside pass from Shaun Malton sent Rory O’Brien over for the try bonus score and a seven-point lead.

The Chiefs spent most of the remaining time defending until they won a scrum against the head under their own post to end the game.

On Saturday the Chiefs travel to Royal Wooton Bassett. At the Blackmore Field the Quins entertain Exeter Engineers kicking off at 2:30pm.
