Royal Wootton Bassett RFC

12 - 13

(HT 7-0)

Sidmouth RFC
Sidmouth made the long journey up the motorway to a very welcoming Royal Wootton Bassett. Sidmouth started really well with lots of possession in the first 15 minutes in their 3rd, Sidmouth stuck to the attacking plan and executed well.

RWB defended well on their own line with both sides not giving much away. Sidmouth went down to 14 men, when from Sidmouth’s 1st penalty from a high tackle from Phil Dollman led to a yellow card.

With their first attack into Sidmouth’s third of the pitch, RWB created some pressure with quick ruck speed and got outside the Sidmouth defence to score the first points of the half, the kick went in off the posts and ended the half 7-0.

Sidmouth started the 2nd half exactly the same as the 1st half with lots of possession, with the 1st entry into there final 1/4, sidmouth went through the phases well and Shaun Malton finished off the patient play with a well worked try. From the kick off Sidmouth had the wind in there sails and gain lots of momentum up the pitch, after some sustained pressure a well worked forwards move from a set piece, resulted in a 2nd try for Shaun Malton, the kick was unsuccessful.
Sidmouth carried on dominating possession, which led to the ref finally giving RWB a yellow after 2 or 3 warnings at the breakdown.

With both teams attacking in the middle 3rd, RWB went through the phases and a perfectly weighted cross field kick from RWB resulted in a try for winger, the kick was unsuccessful making the score 12 - 10 to the home side with 10 minutes to go.

Sidmouth showed resilience after last weeks performance and returned to RWB try line, lots of pressure led to an attacking opportunity but Sidmouth failed to convert a 3 on 1 out wide. RWB defended their line with some aggressive tackles and smart play in and around the breakdown.

In the last few minutes a kick exit that didn’t make touch was well returned by Sam Heathcote who made great yards into the RWB half, from that breakdown a cynical penalty from RWB gave Man of the Match Phil Dollman a chance to win it from 45 metres straight in front of the posts, which he duly converted.

With 30 seconds left on the clock Sidmouth stole a RWB lineout and managed to get the ball off the pitch and rewarded with a well earned victory on the road.
