Sidmouth Chiefs achieved their third successive win and notably against the league leaders Launceston. The match was equally contested until the final 15 minutes, when the Chiefs took control with three tries in ten minutes. The much improved lineout work providing the control lacking in earlier matches was very important and led to two of the tries.
The visitors opened the scoring with a quick tap penalty that caught the Chiefs napping. The scrum half added the conversion. Sidmouth replied a few minutes later when a diagonal kick by Jake Smith found Cian Warren on the left wing. He left two players in his wake as he weaved his way to the line for Smith to add the conversion.
The Chiefs were soon back on the attack but could not turn pressure into points or capitalise on the Launceston yellow card. Launceston then took control for the final ten minutes of the half and hey took the lead when their number seven forced his way over the line from close range. The try was unconverted. Launceston were soon back on the attack but the Chiefs held out until half time.
Lewis Hole was yellow carded a minute after the restart but Launceston were unable to capitalise. Instead the Chiefs drew level when Shaun Malton touched down on the back of a lineout catch-and-drive play.
Launceston regained the lead midway through the half, when the fly half chipped ahead over the Sidmouth backs and ran on to regather. The try was converted.
The Chiefs drew level when Jake Smith, having his best game at fly half since joining the club, broke through a tackle and ran on to touch down under the post before converting.
The Chiefs went in front two minutes later when a fine handling move up the left from halfway was finished off by Cian Warren to chalk up a bonus point.
As the Chiefs took control, Tom Hodge touched down from a second lineout catch-and-drive play and Smith added the conversion to leave Launceston two scores behind. Another outstanding handling move involving many players was finished off by Lewis Hole and converted by Smith.
Launceston took control for the final minutes but outstanding defensive work by the Chiefs denied them a bonus point.
On Saturday the Chiefs travel to take on second placed Barnstaple.
On the Blackmore Field the Quins entertain Crediton 2nds, who have overtaken them at the top of the table. Kick off is at 2.30pm.
