Sidmouth RFC

15 - 20

(HT 0-0)

Brixham RFC
Brixham started with a try in the second minute. A long kick from their own half gave them a 50/22 lineout close to the Sidmouth line. An attempted catch-and-drive was stopped but after a series of rucks a prop drove over for a try which was converted by the full back.

From the restart, the Chiefs spent much of the next ten minutes in the Brixham half. This produced two unsuccessful penalty attempts, one of which rebounded from an upright. Brixham adopted a pragmatic approach, in damp underfoot conditions, to kick long from their own half throughout. A tactic which proved successful in terms of territory gained thanks to Sidmouth errors, knock ons, fumbles and twice kicking the ball over the Exmouth dead-ball line. However, it did not produce points against a well organised Sidmouth defence.

A Tom Hodge break from his own half took play into the opposing 22 but a knock on ended the promising move. However, play remained mainly in the Brixham half. Half an hour into the game, the Chiefs were camped on the Brixham goal line, where the defenders received two yellow cards in quick succession. Following the second card, Harry Emmett scored following a quick tap penalty move. James Docherty added the conversion to level the scores.

The Chiefs were penalised from the restart kick allowing Brixham to retake the lead from the resulting kick.

In the final minute of the half, the Chiefs used their extra men as Brixham ran out of defenders under pressure for Finn Lashbrook to touch down for an unconverted try and a 12-10 halftime lead.

Brixham regained the lead three minutes into the second half when they used a scrum inside the Sidmouth 22 to set up a series of ruck from which a try resulted. The full back added the conversion. A penalty ten minutes later extended the lead.

James Docherty kicked a penalty for the Chiefs to ensure a bonus point in an otherwise lacklustre last quarter.

On Saturday the Chiefs travel to take on bottom club Chew Valley.

On the Blackmore Field the Quins entertain Newton Abbot 2nds.

The Colts travel to Ivybridge.
