Sidmouth won the toss and decided to play with the strong gale force wind in the first half. Chew scored the first points of the game from an attack from their own 22, a missed tackle in the midfield and the 15 raced 65m to score, which he converted. After the early wake up, Sidmouth turned the ball over and after a few decent forward carries, a clever kick from Tom Hodge allowed Sam Heathcote to win the race and score out wide, the kick was missed into the wind.
With penalties being given both ways at scrum time, Chew kicked to the corner and built some good pressure on the Sidmouth line, the home side eventually scored out wide, the conversion was successful 14-5.
With the wind behind them Rory O’Brien put a lovely 50/20 deep into the Chew 22m, a lose lineout fell into Shaun Maltons hands who dived over from 5m out, Jake Smith learnt from the 1st kick and nailed a touchline conversion in Dan Carter style from 2009. 14-12.
Momentum shifted in Sidmouth’s favour and making the most of the wind, playing in the Chews 5m, after multiple pick and goes Harry Emmett scored under the posts, Jake Smith kicked the extras 14-19.
The ref took control of the penalty count and binned the home side hooker, Sidmouth kicked to the corner. The lineout was thrown to the back and the forwards went to work with a catch and drive with Malton coming out with the try bonus point try, Jake Smith adding the extras 14-26.
Sidmouth’s discipline slipped and allowed Chew some territory, the home side opting to take a tricky shot at goal, which the 15 converted making the half time score 17-26.
Chew started the second half brightly capitalising on multiple errors from Sidmouth, a solid scrum push over try which the 15 converted making the score 24-26.
Chew were reduced to 14 men again after a neck roll from the replacement hooker. With the wind conditions worsening and favouring the home side, they opted to take 3 points and knocked it over, taking the lead 27-26.
Sidmouth were now chasing the game, but lots of unforced errors meant the pressure couldn’t quite turn into points. Sidmouth were given a get out of jail free card with a penalty 10m on the 15m touch line, unfortunately the kick just went wide. The final whistle followed and the game ended 27-26 to Chew Valley.
Sidmouth can take away 2 losing bonus points on the road, as a very small silver lining to a below average second half performance.
