Sidmouth RFC

44 - 31

(HT 0-0)

Ivybridge RFC
In a game Sidmouth had to win to go into the second half of the season in a good position to avoid relegation, They made a flying start going into a 13-0 lead after just 7 minutes. A long kick by Shaun Malton took play into the Ivybridge 22. A quick tap penalty saw the ball move quickly to George Locke, who exploited a gap to score wide out. From the restart Ivybridge were penalised and the ball was kicked deep into the opposing 22. From the resulting lineout, Shaun Malton peeled off a maul to score. Neither try was converted but Phil Dolman was successful with a penalty kick.

It was Sidmouth's turn to start conceding penalties and fortunes changed in favour of Ivybridge. They scored two well constructed tries by each winger. Both were successfully converted to put them in the lead midway through the half. Another try by the right winger extended the lead to six points. It looked like the Chiefs had reduced the arrears on the half hour when Cian Warren crossed following a Shaun Malton break but the referee had spotted a forward pass. However, the Chiefs maintained an attacking position and Connor Preston found a gap following a series of rucks near the line. Again the try was unconverted leaving Ivybridge one point ahead.

The Chiefs were soon back on the attack and took the lead in first half injury time when a Phil Dolman break and long pass found Rory O'Brien sprinting through a gap to score a try which Dolman converted to give his side a 25-29 halftime lead.

O'Brien was on the scoresheet again 2 minutes after the restart with Phil Dolman also being the provider. He fielded a clearance kick on halfway and made good ground before sending out another long pass for his full back to sprint clear up the right wing. Dolman added the conversion.

Midway through the half Dolman turned from provider to scorer when he broke through the centre to touch down under then posts after a Cian Warren break had created the attacking position. Again the conversion was successful to open up a healthy 20 point lead.

Cian Warren scored the next and the Chiefs final try himself on the end of a fine handling move and a neat offload from Rory O'Brien.

Ivybridge finished the game strongly to earn a bonus point with the help of more Sidmouth penalties. Both were scored by forwards driving over from close range after good approach work from lineouts.
