This was a very entertaining game played in cold but dry conditions as Sidmouth reversed a heavy defeat at Lydney played in September. However, it did not start well for the Chiefs who found themselves behind in less than a minute. Sidmouth kicked off and the ball was caught deep inside the Lydney 22. The player ran through the chasing Sidmouth players without a hand laid on him. He eventually reach the home 22 before being tackled. However, there was plenty of support to finish off the move for a converted try.
Fortunately, this provided a wake up call and the Chiefs were soon back on level terms when they used a lineout in the 22 to launch an attack on the Lydney line. After several phases Lewis Hole exploited a gap in the defence to score and Jake Smith added the conversion. Two minutes later Shaun Malton turned over possession near halfway and fed Cian Warren who had a clear run to the line. The try was not converted.
Play was evenly contested until the half hour when the Chiefs again turned over possession at a ruck on the Lydney 22. A short break by Cameron Grainger opened a space for Shaun Malton to run in under the posts. Rory O'Brien, who had taken over the kicking duties from the injured Smith, converted before adding a penalty a few minutes later.
Lydney replied by putting the Sidmouth line under intense pressure. An outstanding defensive display not only prevented a score but ended with two opponents yellow carded as the halftime whistle sounded.
Following the restart, the Chiefs used the extra men to send Tom Price over in the corner on the end of a fine handling move to earn a try bonus point.
With Lydney restored to a full fifteen, Harry Emmett finished off a multiphase move for another converted try.
Lydney replied with a converted try of their own from a lineout catch-and-drive play.
Tom Hodge soon replied with a fine solo run from his own half before Lydney scored a third try, also converted, from another lineout maul.
Rory O'Brien completed the scoring with a second penalty.
Thanks to this third consecutive win, the Chiefs now move level with Lydney in sixth place in the league.
On Saturday the Chiefs travel to Matson.
The Colts are away to Newton Abbot as they start the Devon Cup playoff league.
