This was an entertaining game, which unfortunately became increasingly ill tempered as it progressed and the referee could well have issued more than the five yellow cards shown during the match.
Having regained possession following their kick off, the Chiefs opened the scoring in the second minute with a penalty kicked by Rory O'Brien. Five minutes later they increased their lead with a try on the blindside of lineout maul scored by Cameron Grainger after it had stalled on the goal line. Rory O'Brien added the conversion from the touchline. Chew Valley opened their account a few minutes later with a penalty kicked by their tight head prop.
The Chiefs went on to dominate the scoring but not the territory or pressure, which was evenly shared. However, outstanding defensive work kept the Sidmouth line intact until first half injury time.
The Chiefs earned their try bonus point after 25 minutes thanks to tries added by Shaun Malton on the end of a good handling move down the right, Sam Heathcote in support of Dan Armstrong, who intercepted inside his own 22 and Phil Dollman touched down under the posts following an inter-passing move with Shaun Malton, who initiated things when he broke away from a ruck on halfway. Two of these were converted. Haydon Down added a fifth from a lineout catch-and-drive play which was also converted.
Chew Valley scored a well-worked try by their left winger when they won a scrum against the head in injury time. The successful conversion brought the half to an end.
Another scrum won against the head two minutes into the second half resulted in a try by the Chew Valley number eight which was converted. This was followed by a Rory O'Brien penalty before the game became increasingly ill tempered and scrappy.
Midway through the half Shaun Malton ran a good angle through the centre from the 22 to score, adding another converted try.
Chew Valley completed the scoring at the end of a fine handling move down the left. The try was converted but they were denied a bonus point try by determined Sidmouth defence.
This win puts the Chiefs in sixth position in the league.
There are no league games on Saturday but the Over 35s entertain Kenilworth Vets on the Blackmore Field kicking off at 2.30pm.
