Sidmouth hosted second-placed Topsham on the last Saturday before Christmas.

Topsham capitalised on a couple of Sidmouth’s mistakes in the first half and ran into a half-time lead of 7–31.

Sidmouth’s try scorer in the first half was Nathan Tomkins.

Sidmouth showed a lot of spirit to keep playing and, with three second-half tries from Fin Lashbrook, Rory O’Brien and a second for Tomkins, Sidmouth secured a precious try bonus point.

Credit must go to Topsham, who are a very well-drilled side with powerful ball carriers and excellent handling skills.

That is why they kept finding holes in Sidmouth’s defence throughout the match and ran in nine tries in total. The final score was 29–55.

At the Christmas break, Sidmouth lie in 10th place in Region 1 Tribute Ale SW with 21 points.

Royal Wootton Bassett, in 9th place, also have 21 points but a better points difference.

January looks to be a very important month, as Sidmouth play four games, including two home fixtures against Marlborough and Matson, who are currently 11th and 12th in the league.

Congratulations to vice-captain Archie Cruze on earning his 50th cap.

A Sidmouth XV will play a President’s XV in the traditional Boxing Day match at the Blackmore, with kick-off at 2pm.
