St Austell RFC
Sidmouth RFC
A defensive masterclass, clinical finishing and plenty of Sidmouth grit!
Sidmouth RFC made the long trip to Cornwall to face St Austell, looking to avenge last season’s heavy defeat. What followed was a hard-fought contest that required every ounce of defensive resilience, composure and determination to bring home a valuable victory.
Playing down the slope in the first half, St Austell enjoyed the majority of possession and territory, forcing Sidmouth into a sustained defensive effort. Will Cornish, Cam Grainger and Shaun Malton put in some huge tackles, while Harry Emmett marked his return to the side with a typically relentless defensive performance and an enormous tackle count.
Sidmouth had opportunities to strike at the other end, but the final pass and execution let them down at crucial moments. Despite a tremendous defensive shift, St Austell eventually made their pressure count, crossing for a converted try just before half-time to take a 7–0 lead into the break.
The half-time message was clear: take confidence from an outstanding defensive display, execute the strike moves and make the most of the opportunities when they came.
Sidmouth did exactly that.
The visitors came flying out of the blocks after the restart, scoring twice in the opening 15 minutes to turn the game on its head.
First, Dan Powell read the St Austell attack superbly, intercepting a pass before showing the pace to outstrip the covering defence and race under the posts. He added the conversion to level the scores and give Sidmouth the perfect start to the second half.
The second try was a reward for the work put into the attacking game. A well-executed strike move exposed the space left by a tiring St Austell defence, allowing Thomas Mead to finish confidently and put Sidmouth in front.
With the momentum firmly behind them, Sidmouth continued to dominate possession and territory, patiently working through multiple phases and asking further questions of the home defence. Their pressure was eventually rewarded with an excellent team try, Cian Warren getting the final touch to extend the lead, with Powell adding the extras to make it 19–7 with around 15 minutes remaining.
However, anyone who knows St Austell will know they are never beaten until the final whistle. The home side struck back with a well-finished breakaway try, setting up a tense finale at 14–19.
The closing stages were a real test of character. St Austell threw everything at the Sidmouth line, but the visitors refused to buckle. Bodies went on the line, tackles kept coming and the collective determination to protect the lead was there for everyone to see.
With the game hanging in the balance, Rory O’Brien produced a crucial turnover to relieve the pressure and help Sidmouth see out the remaining moments.
Final score: St Austell 14–19 Sidmouth RFC.
This was a victory built on defensive courage, second-half execution and a team unwilling to give an inch. Coming to Cornwall, facing a determined home side and delivering under pressure is something the whole squad can take real pride in. The Player of the Day was Cam Grainger in the back row.
We return to The Blackmore next Friday for a local derby as we welcome Topsham RFC for what promises to be a cracking contest to kick off the weekend.
