Sidmouth U18 Girls played Devonport in the regional semi finals of the National Cup last Sunday at their homeground, Blackmore. Devonport were playing with reduced numbers so the girls were looking forward to a 13 a side game for 70 minutes in the sunshine!
Playing in front of their home crowd and being given a tunnel onto the pitch by the Sidmouth Womens 1st XV (The Valkyries) meant the Sidmouth girls attacked from the start with Minty May scoring under the posts within minutes and then converting it. Great distribution by Abi Alner, who was in at 10 for the injured Lucy Tanner, meant Sidmouth kept the tries coming with Bella Breen stepping a couple of players to finish in the corner soon after. Sidmouth continued to pressure Devonport in defense but did especially well in retaining possession for the first half. The first half ended 34 -5 .
The second half started and the work upfront by Sidmouth was lead by the captain Cleo Turley who with Maddy Robinson and Annabelle Bird put in tackle after tackle and with Ellie Wood dominating the line out with the help of her lifters Elllie Monro Higgs and Lottie Reid, most of the game was played in Devonports half.
Wingers Charlotte Starr and Tilly Gravelle did excellent work getting up the pitch and keeping the ball alive with Charlotte also finishing of a move started by a great disrupting run by Fi Wilson and Jess Perry. The continued pressure meant that the highlight of the match was a succesive 5 passes out from the tackle including Daisy Grove and Esme Bagwell to send full back Rosie Tidball in for her 6th try (yes 6th!).
Overall the final score of 58-15 was a great result for Sidmouth and the full grandstand appreciated it as well as the Devonport girls great attitude to the game. Thanks especially to the Sidmouth Valkyries for their support.
