SDMOUTH COLTS 35 v KINGSBRIDGE COLTS 19
Sidmouth Colts recorded their first win in the Devon Colts Cup group thanks to a sparkling second half performance against Kingsbridge.
Sidmouth opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Yan Mercan powered over from a ruck near the line following tap penalty move. The try was unconverted.
Kingsbridge equalised with a try from a well-executed lineout catch-and-drive play. Despite this setback, the Sidmouth forwards were playing well, gaining good possession from the set pieces and strong running to breach the gain-line. However, the backs were struggling for cohesion to make good use of the possession.
Sidmouth regained the lead on 25 minutes when Joe Swann peeled off on the blindside of a lineout maul and dived over in the left corner. The conversion attempt drifted wide, but Joe Evans was successful with a penalty kick on the stroke of halftime.
The Sidmouth backs found their form five minutes after the restart with an excellent move started on halfway and finished off by Ollie Hansford-Harvey. Two minutes later backs and forwards combined to score a bonus point fourth try scored by George Merson-Lovesey with a move following a turnover on halfway. Joe Evans added the conversion.
Another turnover on halfway led to a try touched down by Will Boulton.
Despite the increasing deficit, Kingsbridge staged a spirited fight back and, after a long period of pressure in the home 22, they scored a converted try from a tap penalty move.
With ten minutes to go, Joe Swann forced his way over from close range for his second try.
In the closing minutes, the Kingsbridge fly half exploited a gap following a ruck near the Sidmouth line to touch down near the posts. His conversion completed the scoring.
On Saturday the Colts complete their competition with a trip to Barnstaple. A win could see them finish in third position.
The Chiefs travel to play promotion contenders Chew Valley.
At the Blackmore Field a Sidmouth Over 35 team take on Exeter Saracens Over 35s kicking off at 3pm.
