Teignmouth RFC

14 - 56

(HT 0-0)

Sidmouth RFC
Sidmouth produced an almost faultless first half performance at Teignmouth to score 30 unanswered points. However, the home side produced a spirited display in the second half with play being confined to the Sidmouth half for long periods as they gave the Chiefs a lesson in ball retention.

Despite Teignmouth’s fight back, the Chiefs scored four tries to two to extend their lead thanks to some sharp opportunism.

The Chiefs signalled their intent in the first minute when the backs launched a slick move from a scrum near halfway to send Phil Dolman sprinting into the opposing 22. A couple of phases later, the ball was transferred swiftly to Sam Heathcote. The right winger left two defenders in his wake on the way to the line.

Ten minutes later, Tom Hodge and Phil Dolman made the running in a move finished off by Jed Reid.

The forwards made the hard yards to the line before Dan Retter’s long pass found George Locke running a perfect line for try number three. Retter added the conversion and followed it up with a penalty a few minutes later.

A charge down by James Salter bounced perfectly for Cameron Grainger to score the bonus point fourth try.

In first half injury time, Sam Heathcote scored a second try on the end of a slick handling move.

Any thoughts of a runaway second half were soon dispelled as Teignmouth found a level of intensity previously missing. They moved the ball through multiple phases, keeping the Chiefs pinned inside their own half. The stubborn defence was eventually pierced by a sidestepping run from the outside centre. He touched down under the post leaving an easy conversion.

Against the run of play, Tom Hodge intercepted to run in from 40 metres. Cole Monaghan kicked the first of three conversions.

Midway through the half, the Chiefs benefitted from the new 50/22 law when Dan Retter’s kick from his own half rolled into touch just short of the Teignmouth line. From the lineout, the forwards set up a maul. Cameron Grainger broke to the open and offloaded for George Locke to dart over for his second try.

Teignmouth enjoyed another period of pressure and were rewarded with a converted try from a lineout catch-and-drive play.

In the closing minutes, the Chiefs profited from Teignmouth mistakes. Phil Dolman ran in from an interception on the ten-metre line. Then, in injury time, Rob Griffin latched on to a loose ball and produced a side-step which the late Phil Bennett would have been proud of on his way to the line.

On Saturday the Chiefs are at home against league leaders St Austell kicking off at 3.00pm. The Cornishmen are pre-season favourites for the league title and will provide a severe test.

The Quins play New Cross at Sidford kicking off at 3.00pm.

The Colts are also playing at Sidford against Withycombe Colts.
