Truro RFC

29 - 14

(HT 0-0)

Sidmouth RFC
A much-changed Sidmouth team made the worst possible start at Truro. They failed to catch the ball from the home side’s kick off. Truro immediately gained possession and the fly half launched a diagonal kick. Again, Sidmouth failed to gain control of the ball and the Wadebridge right winger hacked it on over the goal-line. He followed up to touch down for an unconverted try.

Play would be confined to the Sidmouth half for 37 of the remaining 39 minutes of the first half. Fortunately, a score on their one period in attack, backed up by determined defensive work, helped to keep them in the game until the closing ten minutes of the game.

Truro increased their lead when they launched a counterattack from a wayward kick. The move was finished off by the outside centre and the fly half converted from wide out.

A third try followed on the half hour following a long period of pressure, which stretched the Sidmouth defence until the full back exploited a gap to touch down near the posts. The conversion opened up a 19-point lead.

A penalty enabled the Chiefs to kick for a lineout on the Truro 22. They used a driving maul to set up a series of rucks near the goal-line until Dan Armstrong powered his way over for Cole Monaghan to convert and give his side some momentum to take into the second half.

The Chiefs started the second half well and almost scored in the opening minutes when Phil Dollman was tackled just short of the line. A Truro forward was yellow carded at the resulting ruck. Unfortunately, the Chiefs only had a missed penalty attempt to show for the period of pressure.

A lapse of concentration gifted Truro a fourth try when a long kick found a big space inside the Sidmouth 22. The Truro winger was first to the ball, which he scooped up and sent his full back on a clear run to the line. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

With ten minutes to go, it was the Chiefs turn to profit from a diagonal kick. The ball bounced perfectly for Sam Heathcote, who left two defenders in his wake on his way to the line. The conversion put them within 12 points and the possibility of at least a bonus point. However, it was Truro who completed the scoring in the closing minutes with a lineout catch-and-drive play.

On Saturday the Chiefs entertain Wadebridge Camels kicking off at 3.00pm.

The Quins play Torrington at Sidford with a 3.00pm kick off.
