Sidmouth RFC

15 - 29

(HT 0-0)

Wadebridge Camels RFC
A spectacular try inside the first minute proved to be a false dawn for the Chiefs as it was followed by an error strewn performance against a Wadebridge team too good not to capitalise with a bonus point win.

Rob Griffin caught the ball from the kick off and drove forward to start a handling move. James Powell made a clean break from the halfway line and sold an outrageous dummy to fool the covering defenders before touching down in the left corner. The try was unconverted.

Wadebridge drew level five minutes later when a poor clearance kick and couple of missed tackles set up the full back for a run which produced an unconverted try for the right winger.

By the midpoint of the half, Wadebridge had extended their lead with two tries from lineout catch-and-drive plays, the second of which was converted.

The visitors continued to dominate proceedings and earned their bonus point with a try scored by the outside centre following a move from a scrum near the Sidmouth line. The conversion left the Chiefs with mountain to climb.

The Chiefs responded well and finished the half on the attack. Dan Armstrong crossed the line in injury time but was unable to ground the ball.

The Chiefs started where they left off and kept Wadebridge pinned inside their own half for much of the third quarter, but it wasn’t until Wadebridge had two players in the sin bin that they cut the arrears. James Powell cut a good angle to score a second try after the forwards had driven a maul deep into the opposing 22.

Sidmouth were soon back on the attack and scored a third try when Ollie Hansford-Harvey showed good strength and determination to finish of a handling move.

When James Powell was yellow carded with five minutes to play, Wadebridge took advantage to score an injury time try when the fly half finished off a counterattacking move.

On Friday the Chiefs travel to play Bridgwater and Albion.

On Saturday the Quins entertain Tiverton 2nds on the Blackmore Field kicking off at 2.30pm.

The Colts play Barnstaple Colts at Sidford with a 2.30pm kick off.
