Sidmouth RFC

38 - 10

(HT 0-0)

Chard RFC
Sidmouth Chiefs ended their losing run with a comfortable win against Chard, but the final result could not have been predicted for much of the first half. The Chard pack was dominant in the scrums with the Sidmouth pack being driven backwards.

The Chiefs were winning good possession from the lineouts and benefitted from poor kicking by the visitors, which gave counterattacking opportunities. The Sidmouth backs created promising moves, but handling errors and wrong options saw opportunities missed.

Chard eventually took the lead with a penalty kicked by the full back.

On the half hour, the Chiefs eventually put together a move they had been threatening. The ball was passed through many hands across the field and back for Phil Dollman to touch down and Cole Monaghan kicked the first of five conversions from wide out.

In first half injury time they doubled their lead when Harry Emmett produced a powerful run into the 22 from a tap penalty move. Tom Seward was on hand to drive over from close range. The try was converted to give a 14-3 lead at the break.

Tom Seward playing his first game since the first covid lockdown, was in the action again soon after the restart. He peeled off a maul ten metres out and took three defenders over the line with him.

From a similar position, Aidan Summerfield dummied his way through a gap on the fringe of a maul to touch down under the posts.

Midway through the half, Chard scored a consolation try when a forward drove over after a series of rucks near the line. The full back added the conversion.

With five minutes to go, Cole Monaghan kicked a penalty.

In injury time, good handling set Jake Allen on a run down the left into the 22. When the ball was moved swiftly back across the field, Asa Unsworth sprinted over in the corner. The conversion was followed by the final whistle.

On Saturday there is a break in the league programme and the entertainment on the Blackmore is provided by Sidmouth Veterans as they take on Topsham Veterans kicking off at 2.00pm.
