The Chiefs found the league leaders on top form at Tregorrick Road as they suffered a heavy defeat.
St Austell opened the scoring in the third minute after the kick off had failed to travel the required ten metres. The resulting scrum provided an attacking platform to work their way into the Sidmouth 22, where they drove over from a lineout catch-and-drive play. The try was converted by the full back.
Two more tries were added in the next ten minutes. A turnover on the Sidmouth 22 was converted into a try by the right winger before his fellow wingman won the race following up grubber kick through the centre.
The Chiefs, with the wind at their backs, eventually shook off the coach journey to dominate territory for much of the remainder of the half. They deservedly cut the arrears with a trademark opportunist try from Sam Heathcote chasing a well-judged diagonal kick from Cole Monaghan.
The Chiefs were right back in the game until the final minute of the half. A repeat of the opening try from a lineout deep inside the Sidmouth 22 gave St Austell the try bonus point.
Facing the wind in second half there was no way back for the Chiefs as the home side ran in four more tries. The right winger scored twice on the overlap to complete his hattrick. Another successful lineout maul was followed by a slick tap penalty move to complete the scoring.
To their credit the Chiefs finished the game camped on the St Austell goal line but were denied a late consolation score.
On Saturday the Chiefs travel to Wellington.
