The Valkyries started playing up the hill against Helston, in a game consisting of four 20 minute quarters.
It was the visitors who took the lead, after having a penalty scrum a few yards from the try line. Helston’s scrum half was able to pick the ball up and place it under the posts which was calmly converted by the No.10.
Helston then increased their score with a quick break through the Valkyries defence. A stoppage in play occurred as Caitlin Perry went down with an injury, and was replaced by Amber Harris. A terrific tackle by Jess Perry took the Helston winger into touch on the 22, which led to a long stoppage in play, due to a serious injury for the Helston player.
Helston managed to get another try as they took a quick tap and go and pressed the Valkyrie back line. The Valkyries performed some fantastic passing across the line which gave Lilyan Cecilia an opportunity to gain some yards which she did, but was unfortunately tackled into touch. With a lot of injuries and stoppages in play the first quarter finally ended with the visitors in the lead at 0-19.
A slow start to the second quarter, but Sidmouth were the stronger team with Zoë Dunn & Amy Nairne-Clarke providing some excellent, strong tackles and turning over the ball in several rucks. Sidmouth’s first try came with a fantastic give and go between Esme Bagwell and Jess Perry. Leila Stone span the ball out the ruck to Esme who passed onto to Jess who gained some yards before popping the ball back to Esme for the try.
Lilyan showed her pace later on in the quarter as she received the ball once again. Valkyries kept showing a lot of determination this quarter, which enabled them to keep in touch on the scoreboard. Em Shayler received the ball at the 22 line and swivelled her way through the Helston Back line to get to the try line in outstanding fashion.
The Valkyries weren’t done yet, and neither was Em as she produced her second try and another darting run past the defence.
The visitors started the third quarter strongly by pushing at the Sidmouth defence, fortunately for them scoring making it 15-24. Claire Housden made a massive impact coming on as she stopped seemingly every Helston player running at her. Valkyries kept on producing their slick passing play, finding space and length which was gifted as the ball ended up in Lilyan’s hands at half way where she sprinted towards the try line.
The fourth quarter was dominated by Helston as the Sidmouth ladies started to feel worse for wear. There was a fantastic piece of play by the Helston no.13, she weaved through the Valkyries defence from half way to put the ball under the posts. Helston used their momentum and continued on getting the ball to try line finishing the game at 20-46.
The women now have a well earned break, with their next league game on Sunday 9th October away to Okehampton, KO at 2pm.
