With a three week break in the league season, this annual fixture was a welcome opportunity for the Chiefs to maintain match sharpness before they travel to play league leaders St Austell on the resumption.
It took the Sidmouth players fifteen minutes to run off the effects of the festivities, during which the scratch President’s team made life decidedly uncomfortable as they kept play in the opposing half. Indeed, had they managed to win the four lineouts they forced inside the 22, they may well have taken an early lead. As it was, the Chiefs defended well until they eventually broke out to establish an attacking position.
George Locke made the initial break before sending an inside pass for fellow centre James Emmett to run in for an unconverted try.
A second try soon followed when Cole Monaghan sent a long pass to Phil Dollman joining the line from full back to create an overlap for Jake Allen to sprint over in the corner.
The Chiefs maintained territorial advantage for the remainder of the half, but a determined defence kept the score to 10-0 at halftime.
Ten minutes into the second half, a jinking run from Phil Dollman took play deep into the President’s 22. After a series of rucks, Jed Reid forced his way over the line. Cole Monaghan added the conversion.
The Chiefs took control in the final quarter to add four more tries.
Jake Allen scored his second try after a series of quick rucks had stretched the defence to create an overlap on the right.
A James Emmett break initiated a move in which the ball travelled through many hands before Emmett himself touched down under the posts. The try was converted.
Matt Ewings finished off a quick tap penalty move when he was driven over from a ruck close to the line.
Another quick tap penalty initiated a fine handling move finished off by Cameron Grainger. The conversion completed the scoring.
